Tahquamenon Falls State Park encompasses close to 50,000 acres and stretches more than 13 miles. Most of the park is undeveloped and the park’s centerpiece is the Tahquamenon River and its waterfalls. The Upper Falls is one the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi (drop of nearly 50 feet, 200 feet across and maximum flow of 50,000 gallons of water per second). The amber color water is caused by tannins leached from the cedar, spruce and hemlock in the swamps drained by the river. The extremely soft water churned by the action of the falls causes the large amounts of foam, which has been the trademark of the Tahquamenon since the days of the voyager.
Just 4 miles downstream is the Lower Falls, which consists of a series of five smaller falls cascading around an island. The falls can be viewed from the river bank or from the island and can be reached by a row boat rented from a park concession.

Tahquamenon-Clark Lake Loop – Hiking | Snowshoeing | Cross Country Skiing – The Clark Lake Loop is a 5.2-mile trail that begins at the parking lot on Clark Lake Road. The trail traverses through pine forests and offers views of the picturesque Clark Lake.
Tahquamenon-Emerson Trail – Hiking | Snowshoeing | Cross Country Skiing – This 1 mile trail, located near the Rivermouth Campground, is not yet completed. The last 200 feet to Whitefish Bay is difficult to navigate, but not impossible.
Tahquamenon-Giant Pines Trail – Hiking | Snowshoeing | Cross Country Skiing – The Giant Pines Loop is a 4.1-mile hiking trail located in Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the Upper Peninsula. The trail offers hikers with the sights and sounds of hemlocks, bubbling streams and surrounding wildlife.
Tahquamenon-Nature – Trail Hiking | Snowshoeing | Cross Country Skiing – The 1/2 mile Nature Trail provides an alternative route from the Upper Falls view back to the parking lot. This forested trail features excellent birding during the spring and is carpeted with ferns during the summer. The Nature Trail is also part of the lantern-lit ski and snowshoe trail every Saturday in February.
Tahquamenon-River Trail – Hiking | Snowshoeing – Many hikers come to Tahquamenon to tackle the infamous trail between the falls. This four-mile linear trail is rated difficult due to exposed roots, hilly terrain, and numerous staircases, but ranks as the most scenic trail in the park.
Tahquamenon-Wilderness Loop – Trail Hiking | Snowshoeing | Cross Country Skiing – The Wilderness Loop is one of the most primitive trails in the park, as it loops 7.4 miles across land with very few bridges and boardwalks. The trail crosses through pine ridges, peat lands and old-growth hemlock forests. Typically, this trail is considered one of the more difficult in the park, so visitors should be advised of this before travel.
