The Sandy Hook Trail is located in the Tawas Point State Park on the northeast coast of the Lower Peninsula. The trail is a 1.5 loop that wanders through beach dunes along the picturesque Lake Huron coast. The trail is especially popular for birders, as the park is the site of the Tawas Point Birding Festival and an area that becomes a major landfall for birds migrating across Saginaw Bay. The trail is mainly a sandy path that connects with few portions of a boardwalk that winds along Tawas Bay and Lake Huron. Along the pathway, visitors will find several interpretive plaques that cover a wide variety of topics. Hiking and cross country skiing are the only activities allowed on this pathway.
